Dear Parents Of Little Miracle Babies,The Tears of Pain and Joy with IVF…My husband David and I had tried for many years to have children. Unfortunately for us that didn’t happen…until we were introduced to a very scary thought, IVF!Through the wonders of IVF we finally, with much happiness, conceived our first child, Jesse-Jon. Two years later we were blessed with our second IVF baby, Lily, at 24 weeks gestation, only to our utter devastation and shock watch her die minutes later. The Wonders of it all …It was then with much emotion and heartache I faced labour again with our second daughter at 19 weeks gestation 4 years later.Luckily however, the delivery was stopped and although my waters had broken, the birth was held off until the baby was 26 weeks. The Baby had at this stage been given only 7% chance of survival! I had been forced to stay flat on my back for the entire time in a hospital bed 300 km away from home, husband David and our then 6 year old son Jesse-Jon. Baby Savannah entered our world at 2 pounds and 2 ounces! My husband and I were very scared and the memory of our beloved Lily was very close in our thoughts. |
|
Will she make it …
Every morning I would wake up dreading the news that Savannah might have died. And blessed every moment we had with her.
We cried for the babies in the nearby incubators that had tried so hard to live but had finally lost their fight.
It still hurts to think about the helpless feeling we had when we could only watch our baby struggle to breathe and live.
But we were not allowed to hold her for several weeks at first. We just wanted to give her a cuddle and soothe her weak attempts at crying!
The never ending Treatments …
Watching her cringe in agony every 6 hours when new tubes were pushed down her throat and nose made us weep. It was so hard to hear her pitiful whimpering during drawn out painful blood tests.
She had to have countless needles and blood transfusions, tests and other observations.
And our tears of joy at any tiny improvement! Our hearts swelled with pride when she’d squeeze our finger with her tiny hand.
Step by Step …
During this time we saw many babies come and go in the ICU ( Intensive Care Unit ) with different levels of disabilities and impairments. We could only wonder what fate had brought us.
Every time a test or brain scan was done, we would dread the answers and results. Vision, hearing, cerebral palsy, brain damage, deadly infections or other disabilities were all very real possibilities and an everyday worry for us.
Luckily however, as time went, Savannah grew stronger and stronger and proved to be a real fighter and survivor.
BUT…
4 months after birth, Savannah was still in the Special Care Unit, still very far away from home and family.
Still Waiting …
During this time emotions and feelings ran rampant and I was torn between my little son and husband back home on the farm and my struggling daughter fighting for her life!
It had now been 6 months since I had left home for the hospital…
Savannah had Chronic Lung Disease and lived full time on the oxygen tank.

Feeding …
Feeding was also one of our main issues as Savannah was having great difficulties with swallowing and different techniques were put in place and tried. All sorts of exercises and teats were trialed as breastfeeding wasn’t an option as she couldn’t latch on due to her high palate caused by prematurity. Every day I would watch babies go home that hadn’t been there as long as us and wondering and dreaming when our turn finally would come. I would have all these fanciful thoughts of having a normal life at home with my beautiful little baby and the longing just grew and grew to finally go home! All I wanted was a normal life with my family in my own home!
GOING HOME …
Then one day…the miracle happened…..I was to take Savannah home for the very first time !!!
A tearful but extremely happy Good Bye to the place we had called home for a very long time and big hugs for the wonderful caring nursing staff that had become “family”.
Oxygen bottle and tubes attached I packed our bags and FINALLY WENT HOME!!
I thought the hospital had been scary! |
|||
|
But it was nothing compared to what happened next! Once I got Savannah home, I had so much more to worry about, so much to do; there was just so much I didn’t know.
|
But we DID get through it. I spent countless hours online, on the phone speaking to specialists and to other premie parents, buying expensive books, you name it, I did it, all to save my precious little girl. So now I’d love to share with you what I have learned, so you don’t have to go through what I did. Once we were over the worst of the problems, my mind turned to thousands of other parents, who are struggling like we did with their little premie babies. I set myself a mission to help as many of them as I could, so I created the premie baby handbook ‘Welcome Home, Precious Preemie’. |

Testimonial: Welcome Home Precious Premie
Written by Gina Lundervold-Foley, full time home-schooling mother
Dunja Thamm has written a comprehensive, yet heartfelt guidebook for parents whose babies are born prematurely. According to the Center for Disease Control 1 out of 8 babies in the United States alone is born preterm. Since the early 1980’s the rate of premature babies has grown a whopping 36%. Most of these parents have no known risk for giving birth prematurely, and thereby cannot prepare for the tumultuous of unanticipated events and emotions they will experience both within the neonatal unit as well as upon arrival home. Thamm fulfills the need for information for parents specifically regarding that frightening but long-awaited day to simply bring their baby home. Her book is divided into eleven chapters each extensively covering nearly every topic imaginable such as feeding, sibling jealousy, sleeping and apnea machines, weighing, going about in public, medications, disabilities, recipes for our precious preemies and the happy milestone of the first birthday to name just a few. Each chapter contains personal observations from her own experience as a mother of a preemie as well as observations from other parents, insightful comments and tips, and a host of information on procedures, equipment, common problems and other issues. Although medical information is presented in detail, the book maintains a personal, comforting tone. Parents who find themselves suddenly thrust into the neonatal unit have to cope with unique medical crises and challenges. However, finding emotional support and empathy is often difficult. Thamm offers both clearly, concisely, and in a reassuring tone. Her book offers personal accounts from other parents as well which mirror emotions nearly any preemie parent can relate to. The validation and solidarity is nearly tangible. The personal accounts highlight the multi-faceted issues preemie parents face. It discusses the sense of loss, guilt, and yet complete wonderment and total love for our tiny babies. Preemie parents will feel informed, educated, supported and renewed. Thamm makes it clear; it is possible to be an effective and loving parent, something we all crave, even then the role of the preemie parent is so very different. Although her information is critical, equally important is the face that there are countless ways to connect and share love and joy, even amongst the fear and worry. This book allows these parents to not only have access to valuable information but also discover renewed courage and be buoyed along this journey. Her book is a priceless resource for preemie parents. I heartily recommend this book for new parents of preemies!
Testimonial for Welcome Home Precious Premie.
As the mother of a premature baby I found the information contained in this E-book to be so very relevant to the many trials I was faced with shortly after I gave birth to my beautiful daughter. In fact in my experience I was told very little apart from hard facts from medical professionals so it is wonderful and empowering to read Dunja’s story. On reading the words what struck me immediately was that these were not solely words but Dunja’s soul, her hopes and dreams for her family, laid bare and this is why I feel that this E-book will be such a help and a support for other parents going through caring for a premature baby in its first year. We as parents of premature babies know now that we are not alone and the feelings and worries we are going through are shared by others. This in itself is empowering.
The wonderful aspect of this E-book is that it begins from the first day you take your baby home and it flows so beautifully and organically. It has been well thought out and very well executed in its delivery.
An important aspect of caring so intently for a premature baby, one which had not really crossed my mind as it was not relevant to me at the time, is the fact that siblings could feel put out by the extra care and attention their parent(s) focus on the new arrival. Dunja has covered this topic so well and also gives helpful tips on how to integrate your new arrival into the lives of their older siblings.
What really struck me was the practical advice given, the whole tone of the E-book is more like advice from a close friend rather than from a faceless author and as such I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I must say that I loved the bonus books of recipes for your baby – nice and simple and fuss free and also the wonderful first birthday party guide which gives even more yummy recipes to suit the whole family! Yum!

I take care of my nephew who is 6 months now.
My sister has had major complications from pregnancy and is still recovering. Jayden was born at 28 weeks and he stayed in the hospital for 2 months. Although, he did not go through all that Savannah had to go through, I could definitely draw parallels. Ms. Thamm discussed various tricks and methods to get things accomplished in her book and I plan to try some of those with our little one. Jayden had major issues with feeding and weight gain. The chapter on feeding was super helpful and now at 6 months we are getting ready to start him on solids. The story of Savannah touched us on so many levels. It is also helpful to see the grown up picture of a Philip. It made our hope stronger. I can completely relate to watching other babies in the incubators beside Jayden and worrying for all of them along with my sister. This book has a wonderful positive spin on something that can be devastating. I really appreciate it. I remember all the times that I was keeping vigil over Jayden and panicking almost every hour for him. I wish this book were available 6 months earlier as it helped me calm down so much. I am able to help my sister to bond with Jayden while she is recovering and enjoy Jayden’s accomplishments to the fullest. It has helped us to refocus on the priorities and reminded us that we are not alone. This is a must read for all parents with preemies.
The bonus books that come with Welcome Home Precious Premie are wonderful with tips for the preemie’s first birthday party and yummy recipes. Internet search gives many ideas for hosting the first birthday party, but only this author talks about specific needs and consideration for the preemie. The cake recipes are super easy to follow and very healthy. I will be trying them soon. The yummy recipes are truly that. I have already tried the cherry pumpkin smoothie as I already had the ingredients on hand. The adults on the household love it. This is something we will be making several times this fall. I cannot wait for Jayden to try this. The recipes are very simple and easy to make. This comes in very handy as we are starting to experiment with solid foods for Jayden. He should be starting them in about 2 weeks. Thanks so much Ms. Thamm for these great recipes. Your book is truly a treasure.

Expecting a baby is one of the most exciting times in your life; having that excitement doused with the fear and uncertainty that accompanies a premature birth is terrifying. This book captures the fear, the heartache of loss, the struggle, and the journey towards the most amazing gift of holding your sweet child in your arms.
As the mother of a premature baby I read this book with an idea of what to expect in terms of detailing the experience of an early delivery and the emotional rollercoaster in the weeks, months, and years that follow. What I didn’t expect was the way that the raw emotions accompanying the birth of a premature baby can come rushing back through reading someone else’s well-accounted journey.
Being the champion for our children is something that each mother understands; from the moment they are conceived to the struggles they go through in life. In reading this touching and emotional book I got a firm sense of just how much of a champion the mother of a premature baby needs to be in order to ensure that their baby thrives.
Motherhood is hard; the author does not gloss over the difficulties that she faced. However, her strength and sheer determination to do what needs to be done for the sake of her children’s well-being and happiness is evident through her words.
Filled with tips and helpful advice from someone who has been there – done that – and has the sleepless nights to show for it, this book is a must-read for you if you are pregnant, have delivered a premature baby, or if you are just looking for a touching book that will open your eyes to just how much we go through for the sake of our sweet little ones.

Many parents, especially first timers can get a bit frightened with this prospect.
But you are not alone!
Many parents before you have faced the same journey and I have as a mum myself of an extreme preemie, recognized the need for a hand- in- hand -guide for newbies.
"Dunja’s ebook ,” Welcome Home, Precious Premie’ can be defined a complete, flowing, accessible manual, essential for parents with premature children, but not just for them… it will also be surely useful to me and to my job as a first infancy educator.
Dunja, highlighting her experience as mother of premature children, transmitted me all of her passion and her competence in taking care of them and in making them trust their parents.
Also, some parents’ stories will let us feel some of the anxieties coming with child’s early life, but also the joy for the following coming to a normal growth.
The book reveals itself as a precious document, compelling like a true movie, picturing the story of a mother who has spent all his energy on what really matters in her life: her sweet children and her family!."

The Best Feeling In The World…
Words can’t explain the intense feeling of pride that filled our hearts when we joyfully got to the stage where we celebrated Savannah’s first Birthday!
That was such an immense milestone in her young life, but boy, what a long journey and struggle it had been!
I wish I had been able to read something like this when
I was taking my own baby home from hospital!
Dunja Thamm asked me to contribute to her eBook ‘Welcome Home Precious Preemie’. I was happy to do so as my 2 lb 12 ozs (1260 gms) baby was born 14 weeks premature in 1972 and became a healthy child and adult and now has children of his own.
Dunja’s eBook is an insightful, well researched and detailed look at many of the problems a mother of a preemie baby may face when the exciting moment comes that she can take her precious little one home. It is a practical guide for mothers who may find that medical and professional help is not as readily available as they hope, as was the case with Dunja, myself and other mothers whose stories feature in the book.
An important thing for a mother assuming the responsibility of a fragile tiny baby is to know that you are not alone, and that others have faced similar problems, dealt with them and enabled their babies to grow into healthy happy children and adults.
I congratulate Dunja for thinking beyond her own needs and challenges and reaching out to other mothers with this valuable eBook. It has been a privilege to be associated with it. I wish I had been able to read something like this when I was taking my own baby home from hospital…
